Second case study

improve operational efficiency while reducing energy consumption

Issue encountered

This wastewater treatment plant is a two-stage activated sludge plant with three cascades each. It is undergoing modernization to increase its capacity from 50,000 inhabitants to 115,000 inhabitants. In addition to increasing capacity, the management aimed to improve operational efficiency while reducing energy consumption. Another objective was to enhance safety.

Part of the infrastructure includes a variety of pumps and mixers, which are integral to the wastewater treatment process. These pumps and mixers need to be regularly removed from the treatment basins for inspection and maintenance, requiring the use of a crane and a winch.

The fixed cranes used by the plant operator were large, heavy, and difficult to use. Therefore, the owner/operator decided to explore other solutions as part of the modernization. The winches needed to be capable of lifting the heavy mixers and pumps over the safety wall of the tank. They also needed to be lighter, easier to use, and portable.

Proposed solution

The recommendation was to equip the robust portable Davit cranes with base extensions to increase their working height. The base extensions allow the crane booms to easily swing the pumps and mixers over the safety railings and into the tanks. Several crane bases were also recommended for permanent anchoring next to the tanks. This enabled the operator to move the portable cranes from one station to another quickly and efficiently, thereby reducing the need for additional cranes.

Obtained result

The owner/operator approved the solution and purchased two portable Thern Davit cranes along with enough bases to accommodate each tank containing a pump and/or mixer.
